A man who stabbed two men in Essex 7 years ago - killing one of them - has been jailed for at least 26 years.
37-year-old Mark Parrish was sentenced earlier after the unprovoked attack in Harold Hill in 2004.
He killed Chris Taylor, 25, but Barry Edwards, 38, survived the unprovoked incident outside a social club in Essex while seeing in the New Year.
Parrish, described as a family man with no previous convictions, went on with his life but was charged after confessing to four women.
He was convicted on Friday (27th May) of murder and attempted murder and sentenced today (31st May) to life with a minimum term of 26 years, and 16 years concurrently.
Old Bailey Judge Timothy Pontius told him: "You lost your temper and repeatedly and viciously stabbed Christopher Taylor simply because you saw him arguing with his girlfriend."
Parrish had inflicted "eight savage blows" to Mr Taylor and then stabbed his uncle three times when he tried to help.
He was initially arrested after the incident at the Harold Hill social club but police found people were unwilling to give them information.
Simon Denison QC prosecuting told the court that Parrish, a father of two, of Hilldene Avenue Romford, said Mr Taylor had been at an event organised by his family to raise funds for Queen's Hospital - it was at this hospital where he died a few hours later.
He had been arguing with his girlfriend outside the club when Parrish tried to intervene.
He ignored their pleas to go away and stabbed Mr Taylor through the heart.
Outside court, Detective Inspector Sheila Stewart said: "This conviction comes after many years of sustained and persistent investigation by my team who I am immensely proud of."
"I hope today's verdict can go some way to ease the pain suffered by the family over the last seven years."
"Parrish, originally arrested in 2004, has lived a complete and full life since this time, aware of the horror he brought to Chris' family on New Year's Day 2004."
"It is only through a constant, unswerving investigation and the bravery of a small number of the local community that we have been able to bring the evidence to court."
