The Empress follows the life of 16-year-old Elisabeth von Wittelsbach (aka Sisi) when she moves to Vienna to marry Emperor Franz Joseph – and the royal drama that ensues. Slight spoiler: Emperor Joseph was originally engaged to Sisi's sister: scandalous.
Season one of The Empress was such a hit, in fact, that a second season has already been greenlit by Netflix.
Here's everything we know so far.
What will The Empress season two be about? No specific plot details have been released, however we expect to the politics around Elisabeth producing a daughter and the continued pressure to produce a male heir, and we'll no doubt see what happens to The Empress after she was confined to the palace walls for flouting royal protocol by displaying compassion (giving her shoes to a young girl in need).
The Empress' producer Jochen Laube has given a brief outline, describing that it will “still at the very beginning of Empress Elisabeth’s life, and it makes us immensely happy to be able to continue her story with a second season.”
We've had many confirmations for returning members of cast – including Devrim Lingnau, who will be back to reprise her role as Elisabeth von Wittelsbach, aka The Empress.
Joining her is Philip Froissart (as Emperor Franz Joseph), Jördis Triebel (as Princess Ludovika) Melika Foroutan (as Archduchess Sophie), Almila Bagriacik (as Countess Leontine von Apafi) and Johannes Nussbaum as Archduke Maximilian.
What are people saying about season two of The Empress? The show's creator Katharina Eyssen has spoken out already about her excitement about creating a second instalment, and the support the show has had so far.
“I am incredibly grateful that we were able to touch so many different people in Germany and all over the world with our series," she said. The story of Elisabeth’s life is a story of the power of love, but also of the courage to be different, and of hope for a better future, and that is what we need at this time. That’s why we are very happy to be able to continue telling this exciting story.”
“It is wonderful to see that our very own interpretation of this popular historical figure has generated interest and enthusiasm among so many people,” Netflix's Vice President of Content for DACH (Germany, Austria and Switzerland), Katja Hofem, added. “It shows that people want to see more of Elisabeth.”
When can we expect season two of The Empress?Seeing as it's in pre-production now, it's unlikely we'll see it until 2024 – but keep your eyes peeled!
