Twitter on the buses in North Somerset

A trial is starting using Twitter to keep passengers up to date on bus services in North Somerset.

Council officers are now using Twitter to keep passengers up to date about a number of bus services.

This trial will provide live updates and details about the WebberBus SuperLink buses in Weston-super-Mare. Participating services are the 4/4A, 16, 83 and 85 and updates will be available from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

From Monday passengers can look at the information online, via a smart phone, or sign up for Twitter’s texting service, which means the messages will be sent to a mobile..

North Somerset Council's deputy leader and executive member for transport, Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, said: "We are always looking for ways to improve our communication with local bus passengers to let them know of any disruptions or changes to services, and we think this could be an excellent opportunity.

"We carried out a similar experiment earlier in the year to keep residents up to date on the progress of some roadworks in Blagdon; we will review this trial in October and depending on the level of sign-up decide to continue to Tweet or not."

Interested passengers can see the feed at http://twitter.com/#!/nscbuses. Twitter users can follow the updates on a computer or smart phone, or anyone can use the quick-follow feature to get updates by text message (there may be a cost for this service).
